Studio Logs

ArtProcess STUDIO LOG enables artists to document the day-to-day evolution of works in progress.

The artist describes how an artwork comes into being by posting (over time) status updates along with images of the day's progress.

The aim of STUDIO LOG is to record the art process as it happens - giving witness to the patterns of ideas, forms, and events that aren't often observed in the completion of a finished work.

In theory, this is the most intimate part of artprocess where a little of the artist self is revealed. It's proved to be the most difficult challenge for the artists so far - many are completely against the idea of openly discussing their process.

Studio Log appropriately abbreviates to SLOG (as in hard).

During the summer, I had been complaining to a friend that the last work I sold was in 1986. This surprised her as she's always been enthusiastic about the stuff I do, and so suggested I send some paintings (within the month) to where she now lives in North America that she could try to sell. I eagerly went out to buy the best quality linen/cotton weave and stretched 4 new canvases. As I was wo ... continued

This studio log was inspired by a comment by J.P. referring to the psychological content of paintings, which had me look back at the things I had been doing five years ago. Well, sometime back then I painted the "Portrait of a painter who died young of old age". I am happy to witness that the latest things I made, have been young girls making their way through fields of radically pruned vines. A s ... continued

Can an ideal be in a seasonal state?

Rising from the Ashes

I look at older work and writings of mine and the more I look, the more I find links to the turns my work has taken and is still taking. This makes me think that I must have always been honest in my painting after all. It has always been about me and we are both travelers on the same train. What I see, it shows. And what I feel, it makes feel. Only, the painting most of the times is aware of what ... continued

Scraps of Paper and Drawings For Paintings

For years I've kept a box where I throw drawings and sketches. Sometimes I'll do these things to work out a composition in advance, or sometimes during the painting process, if I run into trouble, a small study of some component or other is helpful.
At times I might make some drawings to determine if I want to proceed with a painting idea and then decide against it. Other times I just may do s ... continued

As I've already said I do not "invent" my theme in the meaning of creating kind of an "own world".

As far as my subject, the human body, is concerned, I try to avoid taking it as a mere object or a pretext for the interpretation of underlying issues. Compensation (?)

I'm still pondering on the tomatoes. Should I really do new ones after Brueghel's Method is sold? Isn't carrying tomatoes to Italy like carying owls to Athens? And does that make sense?  [goto]

"Inside"

"Inside" nasce dalla rielaborazione di un lavoro del 2004 "Fashion House" composto da una serie di dittici, in cui l'interazione dialettica tra le figure e gli ambienti, i pieni e i vuoti e, sopratutto, le presenze e le assenze, ritagliano delle microstorie nel tessuto globale dell'operazione: ogni singolo lavoro è, contemporaneamente, leggibile come narrazione completa e autonoma e come framment ... continued

Gazing at Trapani

The expressive power of the Gaze has been my obsession for quite a while. If you take a look at my work so far, you will notice that the expression on my portraits varies from tragic to preoccupied to severely calm. I have been photographing myself in this mood and have always asked my model not to smile. My thrill about the Trapani event though, provided a different rute for my gaze obsession. Th ... continued

Wild Flowers

I hope to present two paintings - one of Wild Flowers and the second of a Wave. The Wild flowers are based on photos taken at a big garden in Co. Cork. The idea of the Wave came when I was summitting paintings with the theme of 'Origin'. When I started the Wave, I got the same feeling of excitment that had got previously from seeing the flowers (and also from dancers - not in my project at the mom ... continued

watching and speed

Of course it's interesting watching an artist at work. I myself like to watch when craftsmen are doing their work with that incredible dexterity and knowledge. Or I like to visit plants to find out how all these complicated things are put together. This is one side. The other side is that I need to be alone while at work. I can't stand people watching. They are disturbing that silent dialogue I do ... continued
